DevLog 9 : The end of Production

The end of Production

Art

This week we focused on getting the game as close to a finished product as possible.

We worked hard on dressing all the backgrounds and giving them a nice light setup. Finally Ribbie, Croakie and the Heron have a good forest to live in!

By adding more foreground and background elements the scene resembles our concept quite well!

We also made and further implemented graphics for both the main menu and player join screen!

We decided to add icons next to the frog's hearts in the UI, so hopefully it will be more clear how much health each character has left!

After receiving some feedback, se did a little rework for the textures of the frogs to increase the readability from distace. Now they have cute colored bellies and hands!

The land background texture is a color corrected version of a downloaded texture from Open Game Art - Cethiel Grass Texture

Code

To add some more player feedback, we made it so the platforms slightly move down when a frog jumps on them, and afterwards they'll go back up after a small delay.

Based on feedback from playtesting, we've reworked the death bubble, the more times you die, the more shots it'll take for you teammate to revive you, so try not to die too often!

We also added a croaking animation. Additionally, the music notes in the croak RFX now get left behind the traveling soundwave, so now they move slow enough that you can actually see what they are.

To make dealing damage feel more satisfying, we've added player feedback for when you hit the heron. The heron will now flash red for a second when hit and the screen will shake a tiny bit.

Sound

In terms of music, we added both the OST for the main menu and for while in-game, along with some other sound effects such as the sonic boom and croak.

Level design

The platforms layouts finally got updated! Before there were a lot of spots where the player would bump their head against one of the top platforms and it generally felt pretty frustrating to play sometimes. This week the layouts got updated so this is no longer the case. There is now also a bit more variety to the layouts in the different phases.

And with that, production comes to an end, though it doesn't stop there, there's still 2 weeks of polishing left. During this time we'll be focusing on improving on feedback points even more and making all sorts of tweaks and changes to make sure the game reaches its full potential! See you next week!
